George and Eleanor Pownall
George and Eleanor were the first Pownall emigrants to the American Colonies. They arrived on the ship "The Friends Adventure", one of William Penn's fleet, in September of 1682. They settled in Bucks Co, Pennsylvania.
George and his family were one of the first Quaker families in the Colonies, arriving just one month before William Penn.
George was born on February 26, 1633 or 1634, in Chester, Cheshire Co England. He died on November 11, 1682 in Bucks Co, PA, just 2 months after his arrival. He was the son of George Pownall and Elizabeth Hewitt, and grandson of Humphrey Pownall and Joan Tue.
George and Eleanor had six children.
Reuben Pownall - Born January 9, 1666 or 1667 in England. Married Mary Stacy.
Elizabeth Pownall - Born before 1671 in England. Married Joseph Clowes.
Sarah Pownall - Born February 25, 1671 or 1672 in England.
Rachel Pownall - Born July 28, 1675 in Chester, England. Married Thomas Janney.
Abigail Pownall - Born December 4, 1677 in Chester, England. Married William Paxson.
George Pownall - Born September 11, 1682 in Bucks Co, PA. Married Hannah Hutchinson and had four children, listed below.
George Pownall and Hannah Hutchinson
George Pownall, youngest son of George and Eleanor Pownall, was born in Bucks Co, PA on September 11, 1682. He married Hannah Hutchinson on June 26, 1707 in Bucks Co, PA. They had four children.
John Pownall - Born September 17, 1708 in Bucks Co, PA. Married Elizabeth Ely and had eight children.
Reuben Pownall - Born March 8, 1719 in Bucks Co, PA. Married Effie Burd and had five children. His son Elisha Pownall moved to Hampshire Co, VA (later West Virginia)
Rachel Pownall - Born about 1720 in Bucks Co, PA.
Simon Pownall - Born June 16, 1721. Married Katherine Housel and had nine children.
Elisha Pownall and Abigail Warwick
Elisha Pownall, son of Reuben Pownall and Effie Burd, was born on August 6, 1759 in New Jersey. He married Abigail Warwick in about 1790. Abigail was born in Pennsylvania in 1758. They moved to Hampshire Co, VA sometime before 1830 as they are in the 1830 census. Elisha died on July 17, 1837 in Hampshire Co, VA. He is buried at Bethel Cemetery. Abigail died on February 18, 1854 and is also buried at Bethel Cemetery.
Elisha and Abigail had eight children.
Reuben Pownall - Born before 1774 in Bucks Co, PA. Married Maria Paskall and had two daughters.
Jonathon Pownall - Born September 4, 1784 in Berks Co, PA. Married Mary ? and had two children.
Levina Pownall - Born June 5, 1789 in Berks Co, PA. Married John Carder and had two sons.
Martha Pownall - Born about 1790 in Pennsylvania. Married Absalom Shingleton and had six children. Absalom and Martha are the ancestors of many native Hampshire County, WV Shingletons.
Abigail Pownall - Born about 1793 in Bucks Co, PA. Married James Heare and had four children.
Isaiah Pownall - Born April 25, 1799 in Pennsylvania. Married Mary Heare and had five children.
