Family tradition says that he was part of the underground railroad, helping escaped slaves by rowing them across the Ohio River from the Virginia side to the Ohio side. Served in the 12th West Virginia Infantry, Company C in Wheeling, West Virginia. Family tradition also says that he held General Grant's horse at the courthouse in Appomattox, Virginia when General Lee surrendered.
1900 and 1910 census gives PA as place of birth.
Cause of death was listed as "gangerene of the left leg".
