Statement from William Smith

Frederick Virginia

At the request of Stephen Ferryman, I hereby certify that under an act of the Virginia assembly for furnishing men for that continental line that I recruited the abov mentioned Stephen to serve during the war.

That after the battle of Ninety six, on Bufords Defeat, I do not recollect which, I saw the said Stephen Ferryman in Winchester, who stated that he had been taken to prison and paroled.

I recollect that he was charged with desertion, taken up and examined, set at liberty by the officer and, so well as I recollect, was sent on some time after with recruits from Winchester to join the southern Army.

Given under my hand the 3rd day of June 1818 - Wm Smith (??? Maj Gen Virginia ...)
