Wilson enlisted as a private in Vawter's Battery, Co C (30th BattalionVA Sharpshooters) on March 26, 1863 in Union, Monroe Co, WV. He had been a private in Co H of the 166th militia. He was present until detailed as a boatman on New River from March 17, 1863 to December 31, 1863. Was captured at Waynesboro on March 2, 1865 by Maj. General Sheridan. Prisioner of War at Fort Deleware, DL. on March 12, 1865. Took an Oath of Allegiance at Fort Deleware. Was released on 6/19/1865.

Records describe him as dark complected, brown hair, blue eyes, 5feet 11 inches tall. Literate.

Listed in the 1860 Monroe Co, VA Peterstown Twp. Census in the householdof his father, Thomas. Wilson was age 23.
