William MackGahye ^{1 2}

   Other names for William were William The Colonist and James Mac Gregor.

  General Notes:

There is a legend that James MacGregor came to Virginia from Scotland and changed his name to either Thomas MacGehee or (the most popular opinion) William MackGahye. Although the most widely repeated story about James MacGregor having become Thomas MackGehee is clearly a myth, there is reason to believethe James MacGregor legend may be true.

Furthermore, history suggests that William MackGahye may in deed have been involved in one of the Jacobite wars -- in particular the fight of the Scots against Cromwell in the early 1650s, actually after the death of the storied Marquess of Montrose. ^{1 2}

"At a Court held for Yorke County 17 November 1658. William Magahee aged about 40 years saith That hee see ye said Browne bring away the cannoe from ye Landing of Mr. Hawthorne & was goeing downe ye Creeke & Mr. Hawthorne calling after him hee put hir in at Francis Spurriers landing & there left hir & further saith not."
