John Shingleton

  • Born: Abt 1760, Culpeper Co, Virginia
  • Marriage: Mary Unknown in 1810 in Hampshire Co, Virginia
  • Died: 1842, Hampshire Co, Virginia about age 82

bullet   Another name for John was John Singleton.

bullet  General Notes:

Probable brother to William and Jonathon Shingleton.

I believe that John was probably a brother to William, not his son. By the dates and by William's will (he had a son John Merle b. 1796), this John was not his son. William's family, with the exception of Absalom, stayed in the Taylor / Harrison County area. Absalom (John's nephew ???) moved to Hampshire County, and that is where this John moves also. He had a close relationship with Martha, the widow of Absalom, making land purchases and they lived near each other (assumed from census records - their families were listed consecutively).

1787- In Harrison County Tax List 1793 - John Singleton purchased property in Hampshire Co, VA. Book 9 pp 208
1810 - John marries Mary
1811 - purchased more land. Book 15, pp 51
1815 - John and Mary make several land transactions 1819 - received a land grant - 150 acres in Hampshire Co, VA on Patterson's Creek. Book 5 pp 250 1831 - purchased land with Martha and Jonathon (great nephew). A portion of the land was later used to build Bethel Church and the cemetery (in 1842)

Will probated February 28, 1842.

PERPLEXING QUESTION

I recently found this entry in the Singleton Family Genealogy Forum that has me thinking. Is this the same John Singleton/Shingleton?

Nov. 13, 1774 - Matthew Gilmour to Isaac Gilbbs of Cecil co. Md. and Mark Cahoon of Kent Co. Del. lot N.81 degrees of 226 acres in the South Branch Manor for 278.04 pounds adj. to Kerr and Richardson. Land was leased by said Matthew and his sons Robert Gilmour and Moses Gilmour and stepson John Singleton. (pg 54 of Hampshire and Hardy Counties, VA Abstracts, by Larry Shuck).

"I found in 1789 that Robert Gilmore heir of Matthew Gilmore and widow Sarah sold the land back to these Cecil co. Md people. Since Sarah was listed in this transaction, I believe she was possibly Matthew's second wife. Could she have been the mother of John Singleton? Was she married to a Singleton before marrying Matthew Gilmore? Matthew died in Hardy co. in 1787".

So, could either John Shingleton or Thomas Shingleton have been married to Sarah and died leaving her with small children? Did she then marry this Matthew Gilmour? If so, why is only John listed in Matthew's will and not the other brothers, if indeed, John is a brother to William and Jonathon? Maybe these 2 Johns are different.

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

• Will, 28 Feb 1842, Hampshire Co, West Virginia.

John married Mary Unknown in 1810 in Hampshire Co, Virginia. (Mary Unknown was born on an unknown date and died on an unknown date in Hampshire Co, Virginia.)
