bullet  Marriage Notes:

Abbrev: Marriage Bond Abstract Title: 1824-28 Marriage Bonds Hampshire County Virginia Author: Cheryl Singhal Publication: 1999 Date: Copied /Compiled 1999 Text: Name Year Bond No. Role Ferryman, Rebeckah 1828 39 Ferryman, Stephen 1828 39 fb Ferryman, Henry 1828 39 Other Collins, Ebenezer 1828 39 Other Collins, Ebenezer 1828. 39 Surety McDonald, Nancy 1828 39 Other McDonald, James 1828 39 McDonald, William 1828 39 fg

A blank indicates bride or groom. "f" in all cases means Father, "m" means Mother; a "b" or "g" trailing it indicates bride or groom Surety: this person signed as surety for the bond which indicates the person was over 21; probably indicates a blood relationship to one party or the other, but technically anyone can sign as surety for anyone else, much as today anyone can co- sign as collateral for a loan. Witness: this person witnessed some part of the legalities, usually the age attestation, but not always. They WERE NOT witnesses to the ceremony itself! These bonds are NOT marriage returns, they are licenses to marry and are not binding. Other: this person signed one of the documents in the book associated with the specified bond, but the reason was not specified. For example, one Permission to Marry had six signatures on it, in addition to the father's.

Note: Stephen Ferryman signed the marriage bond for a daughter Rebeckah (spelling form abstract) in 1828. A person named Henry Ferryman signed as well. This could be a son as the 1820 Census showed 3 males in the house. Stephen, Francis, and Henry?
