Johannes (John) Broyle is the original immigrant and father of all the many hundred of thousands of Broyles, Broyl, Broyoll, Breils, Broyhill, and Briell in America today. His family and others like him are considered Germanna Colonists.
Johannes was born on May 1, 1679 in Dußlingen, Wurttemberg, Germany. He died about 1734 in Madison County, VA. He married Ursula Ruop on November 6, 1703 in Otisheim, Wurttemberg, Germany.
The Broyles came to Virginia in 1717 with 19 other families seeking to escape the persecution of the French. Their ship was detained in England for six months because its Captain, Captain Scott, had been imprisoned for a debt. By the time he was released and the passengers were on their way, many of the provisions which had been stored up were running low. Many of the passengers perished on the long journey.
The families had intended to join their fellow countrymen in Pennsylvania. However, an unforeseen storm drove their course to Orange County, Virginia. When they arrived, Captain Scott claimed that the Germans had not paid their way, and would not allow them to land until Governor Spotswood of Virginia gave him the amount demanded for the passage. The families were sold into indentured servitude in order to pay off their debt.
Johannes and Ursula traveled here with their children and settled as a family. It was custom for German families to reuse children's names if the older child had died.
